Every human society is governed by the inherent notion of morality-eiher conceived out of social experience of a people or stipulated by adopted spectrum of world view(as in the 'daggering' and the carnival songs' ban)-yet every society leaves an avenue for expression of socially restricited emotions and behaviors. This license often explored in music and other artistic/cultural expressions are safety valves which can only be clogged up by censorship and ban. Such legal impediments only result in a long term consequence of social imbalance when impulses, often considered vulgar, are allowed to pile-up over time.tcakehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01318311118129685856noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3953848556540874315.post-67214307070100858792012-02-07T06:28:32.316-08:002012-02-07T06:28:32.316-08:00Hi Rajesh,

Freud would have had a field day with the phallic symbolism of the Shower Posse's name (showering their victims with an, ahem, ejactularory spurt of bullets). Khan's eagerness to describe Jagdeo as an "anti-man" (and I've seen and heard that given as "auntie-man" as well) is a way of asserting his own superior masculinity over the president's.

Poorer African-American men, in an age in which they seem increasingly marginalised vis-à-vis both African-American women and white men, and as they face competition at the bottom of the ladder from Latinos/Hispanics of both sexes seem more and more to insist on "respect". This sort of hypermaleness and anti-gayness (with "gay" been defined always as effeminate) is one way to protect respect if you are at the bottom of the social/political/economic ladder even if you are quite wealthy from the drug trade.FSJLhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15803079547494458258noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3953848556540874315.post-80398186360624966802010-07-09T14:31:30.299-07:002010-07-09T14:31:30.299-07:00Hey Val,

On the significance of Dudus' name, Cassidy & LePage's Dictionary of Jamaican English is a good starting place. The word was/is used as "an affectionate name for a child," as in "darling" or "pet." Check out the dictionary entry in full. While the reference to Dudley Thompson's shirt styles may offer secondary rationalization, then, I think we must start with the more likely explanation that this was simply a term of endearment used for the infant Dudus, a term of endearment that stuck with him growing up and may have been more elaborately explained and rationalized in later years. So I think Kei is right that we have to take seriously the more common Jamaican pronunciation of the word and ask why the Tivoli variation has come about.Valnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3953848556540874315.post-17135904844609602942010-07-09T11:56:42.989-07:002010-07-09T11:56:42.989-07:00Ooohhh, wait likkle bit...I almost forgot.
